ROME - SPRING 2015
And first the news… When we are in Rome we normally do not pay much attention to news from the US or Italy. On occasion we do turn on the TV in our apartment and watch French TV (in English) which seems to be the best at reporting straight news without editorializing. BBC is horrible and do not get me started on CCTV (Chinese), Aljazeera or Press TV (Iranian). CNN International is also pretty bad.
The major story here in Italy is the number of illegal immigrants that are coming to Italy from North Africa every day. These are people from all over Africa and the closest Italian island, Lampedusa, is only about 100 miles away. Last week over 11,000 arrived by boat. There is no telling how many others drowned on the way. The EU has pretty much washed their hands of the problem and have left it up to the Italians to solve. It would be like the US government telling Texas that the immigration problem is theirs to solve and offer no assistance.
The worst story of the week was where some people got into an argument on a boat and threw some others off the boat. The people doing the throwing were members of the religion of peace and the ones thrown over, who all drowned, were Christians.
We travelled up to Lake Garda in the north for one week. We stayed in a hotel in Sirmione for seven days and did some biking and some car touring. The entries for the Lake Garda trip can be accessed through the LAKE GARDA link below.
