Uncle Bernie 1936
I sent the following email to my first cousins:
When we were recently in Barcelona, our Spanish friends took us to a small village that had been the last hold out of the Republicans against the fascists during the Spanish Civil War. Franco had completely destroyed the village and instead of rebuilding it the people of Catalonia kept it as a monument. I mentioned to our friends, who are real history buffs that my Uncle Bernie had been here in 1936 as part of the American team representing the US in the counter Olympics. They knew nothing about this so I told them that I would email/mail them some stuff.
When Brenan (The King's son) was born (Feb 1979, Bernie died Dec 1978) and named after Bernie I wanted to make a scrapbook about Bernie for Brenan. I visited Lili (Bernie's wife) and asked her for information about Bernie that I could include in the scrapbook. She gave me some newspaper articles about the 1936 Barcelona Olympics and a picture of Bernie in Barcelona with the US team. He was going to compete on the high bar. The Olympics, which were sponsored by 22 countries, were a protest by the trade unions of the world against the Olympics in Berlin (Hitler had outlawed the trade unions in Germany. Oddly they were not protesting the racial laws in Germany which by that time had been passed and Jews could no longer go to school with Germans, have teaching positions, etc.) . About 3000 athletes attended but they were never held because the Spanish Civil War started just as the Olympics were to start.
When I got home from Spain I thought I might learn some more if I went on the Internet and googled Bernie Danchik, Barcelona, Spanish Civil War. What I learned was that Lili had in 1983 donated Bernie's entire Barcelona memorabilia to the Robert Wagner Labor Archives at the NYU library. According to the NYU library there were three boxes of stuff including a Barcelona Olympiad jacket and armband, a scrapbook, newspaper articles, telegrams, etc. The collection is open to anyone who has a photo ID.
Hynda had to go to NY for a meeting so I decided to go and see Lonnie and visit the museum. On the phone the library said that they would make copies of anything I wanted. At the library I was amazed at the speed at which they retrieved two of the boxes. The first box was filled with telegrams, newspaper articles, etc. The second box had Bernie's scrapbook. They had taken a boat to London and trains to Barcelona. Bernie was obviously the `scribe' for the trip. He kept a daily journal, had a black/white camera and took many pictures and kept every single menu, bus ticket, train ticket, etc. It was very interesting and the attached are Xerox copies of some of the pages of his scrapbook. When I had visited Lili she had not shown me any of this. It would have made a much nicer and more complete scrapbook for Brenan.
They never could find the third box. One of the senior librarians said that it must have been misfiled. She said they had recently had an exhibit at the library on the 1936 Barcelona Olympics and they had used the jacket in the exhibit. My suspicion is that someone now has the jacket or it has been sold on ebay. The one picture that Lili had given me is of the team in their jackets and it would have been neat to still have.
Hope you can see and read the attached. By the way the poster that is shown here is also now on dispaly at the Holocaust Museum in DC where they have an exhibit on the 1936 Berlin Olympics and one small panel on the protests against it where they mention the Barcelona Olympics.
This is a photo of the American Olympic team that went to Barcelona. Uncle Bernie is the 4th from the left.
This is part of my Uncle Bernie's journal:
