Rome Fall 2008
ROMAN FACTOID
In Latin the word for the arches around the Coliseum was `fornices'. Prostitutes
used to rent cubicles under these arches to serve the people who came to the
Colisuem - which is where the word `fornicate' is from.
We are back in Rome for half of October and part of November 2008. Then we will fly to Israel to visit Morgan in November for 10 days before returning to Rome and flying back to Washington.
We were going to have guests for this stay and we planned on taking some short bike trips. Our first stop is normally to pick up our bikes that we keep at our friends Peter and Gretchen's. They live on the fifth floor of an apartment building with no elevator. There are 96 steps to the top floor and then another flight to the roof and storage area where the bikes are kept.
Photo: This is the home for the bikes. They have a nice view of the forum and the Victor Emmanuelle building. It gets quite hot in the room during the summer and the first summer the handle bar pads on the bikes melted. We had to replace them with some Italian handle bar tape which seemed to work.
