LAKE GARDA
The Queen had been to Lake Garda over thirty years ago. She had stayed in Sirmione a town on a peninsula at the very southern end of the lake. She had always wanted to return and we decided to take the week where friends would be staying at our apartment to travel north with our bikes and hopefully bike around the lake.
I tried to book a train that would take us north and allow us on with our bikes. This turned out to be impossible so we decided to drive and rent a car with a bike rack. That was impossible - no car rental company in Rome had bike racks - so we had to rent a larger car with a hatchback that could fit the bikes. We visited the Hertz office to see which car we could rent and since we did not have a measuring tape the Queen came up with this brilliant use of dental floss to measure the bikes. We saw that a Ford Focus would work but when we went there to pick up the car they did not have one. We had to settle for an Alpha Romeo Gulieta - a small hatch back. This is a photo of the car in the garage before we started out. I had it up to 140 KPH (almost 90 MPH) on the autostrada and it felt like we were going 30 MPH.
