PEOPLE
Angelina Jolie
At dinner one night the Queen stated that her lips were getting numb and she thought she has having an allergic reaction to something. When I looked at her I noticed that her lips were getting huge. This photo was taken before a fuller expansion. Fortunately, she did not get worse. The only thing that she ate and I did not was the puntarelle, a vegetable done in an anchovy sauce that the King does not like. The Queen has had it many times before with no reaction.
Mechem and Daisy
The Queen's daughter Dana emailed us and told us that her friend Mechem from Albuquerque was in Rome with her mother. We managed to get together with them on their last night in Rome. They are Native American and they were here for the canonization of the first Native American saint. She is Saint Katherine Tekakwitha and is also known as Lilly of the Mohicans. She is a patroness of the environment and ecology.
A few days later on a bus we met a number of nuns who were from the Philippines. They were also here for the canonization but of a Philippino.
Newport Group
One night we had dinner at Taverna dei Fiori Imperiali with Peter and Gretchen and two women from Newport, RI who own a store that deals with special olive oils. The store is called Virgin and Aged. When Peter and Gretchen visited us in DC they brought a bottle from the store of Kim and Beth and it was wonderful.
Judy and Diane
Our friend and author of the best guide book to Rome spends the fall months in Rome each year and we normally try to have dinner with her at least once each time. This year her friend Diane from Chicago joined us and we went to a nice restaurant in Trastevere out of the main tourist area. It was quite good but we were the only customers in the restaurant for the entire evening.
The Deranged Destroyer
We were out walking in our neighborhood one day and wanted to stop somewhere for a panini. There is a small bar near our apartment and we stopped there and the woman behind the counter started to make us a sandwich with cheese and spinach. At some point while we were waiting we heard someone yelling very loudly. He came out of the kitchen and threw down a case that contained lots of bottles of wine, beer, soda, etc. Most broke as they hot the ground and there was a mixture of fluids all over the floor. He walked out the door and we heard him continue to scream and then he returned and went up to each employee and screamed in his or her face. He left again. He came back still screaming. I wanted to take a movie but I was afraid of him. He was out of control and quite large. This photo is of one of the workers cleaning up the mess.
Massimo
A science colleague of the Queen called us to invite us out to dinner near the Catholic University of Rome where he teaches and does research. It was a wonderful meal and we had lots of different mushrooms.
Campo Dancers
One evening walking through Campo we saw three young people dancing in front of an open store. The store had some sort of promotion and music was blasting out onto the street. The young lady in the red top had absolutely no rhythm and she reminded me of Elaine on Seinfeld trying to dance.
