PEOPLE
Ardo
The Queen's good friend from when she was just a child has introduced us to Ardo. Ardo was going to Rome to meet a friend and happened to be on the same flight as us. We had arranged for him to stay at the hotel next door to our apartment and we shared a cab ride into the city. After we unpacked we went for a short walk and the first stop was Dagnino, our favorite Sicilian bakery, where we shared coffee (tea) and pastries.
The next stop was the top of the Quirinale hill with the Vatican in the background.
…and on Via Veneto…
…and all guests get to pose with Pinocchio.
…we made it all the way to Piazza Navonna and Bernini's Four Rivers Fountain.
Sandra and Yence
Sandra teaches at Roma Tre and is Italian and Yence teaches at Tor Vergata another of the Roman universities. Yence is from Denmark and we ate at Monti Arci.
Judy
Last spring at a lecture that the King attended he mentioned to someone that he was going to Rome and that person had a friend who wrote a book on Rome. The book was called `ROMA is loved spelled backward'. The King tried to buy the book before the spring trip but it came after we left. After I bought the book I contacted the author to tell her how much I liked the book that was full of interesting facts and was written very well. The book is on the art and architecture of Rome and I would highly recommend it. Judy Testa (left) told us that she was going to be in Rome for several months starting in October so we made plans to meet. On one of our first nights in Rome we had dinner with Judy and her friend Betsy (middle) from New York. One interesting thing that Judy told us was that she has to be careful when she introduces herself because if she says `I am Judy Testa' that means `I am stupid' in Italian.
The Mecuri Family
On every trip to Rome we always have at least one dinner with the entire Mercuri family. The Queen worked with Elana when we were in Rome in 2004 for her sabbatical.
Bill and Leah
Our friends from DC who we share theater subscription tickets with came to Rome on their way to the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Sicily. We spent one day walking around and had two dinners with them. The photo is of us having lunch in Trastevere.
…and here we are at Taverna di Fiori Imperiali - their last dinner in Rome.
Gretchen
Gretchen is one half of the Peter and Gretchen team who store our bicycles in their Rome apartment. We had pizza with them and this is the takeout box. There are very few restaurants in Rome that will give you a doggy bag - pizza places are one of the few.
Sabina
One of Hynda's colleagues from NIH who is Italian had a neice who she wanted us to meet. Sabina is a very important art collector in Rome specializing in 1960 - 1980 art. Her private gallery is located above in a building located right on the Campo di Fiori. This is the view from the window of the market in Campo.
This is a photo of Sabina and the King and Queen.
This is the first piece of art you see as you walk in the door.
Elizabeth and Pat
One of our friends from DC just went to her 50th high school reunion and re-met a classmate that she had not seen in 30 years - this was Elizabeth. It just so happened that Elizabeth (on left) was going to be in Rome with a friend while we were there so we met for dinner. Our first dinner - on their first night in Rome - was at Casetta di Trastevere and it was a little disappointing.
The second dinner was at Lampada and it was as usual very good.
Catherine
The Queen's friend Ruth teaches at American University and one of her co-workers was going to be in Rome on assignment so we met Catherine for dinner twice this trip. This picture was taken at Antica Taverna where we put up a business card on the wall four years ago and it is still there.
Tony and His Family - Wife Doreen and Daughter Anna
Thirty years ago at NIH the Queen worked with Tony. He was at a meeting in Ariccia, a nearby hill town and we went there and met them for lunch.
Ron and Marilyn
We met Ron and Marilyn at a Passover seder in Rome three years ago and have become friends. Ron teaches at Oxford and has been there for 25 years. They go to Rome every spring on semester break but this year he is on sabbatical for one year and they are spending it in Rome as he writes a book on Ezra Pound. Marilyn is an engineer and has a consulting company. We went to restaurant in Trestevere near where their apartment is. It was raining and we all had umbrellas. The other person in the photo is Judy Testa, the author of `Roma is Love Spelled Backward' who joined us for dinner at Ponte Sisto.
Yohannes and Tiziana
On one of the last days we were invited to dinner at Yohannes and Tiziana who we met through Peter and Gretchen. Yohannes is from Ethiopia but is a US citizen. He graduated and taught at Harvard and works for a NGO in Rome. Tiziana is Italian and works as a Concept Designer. She designed the apartment they live in and it was quite nice.
Roma Tre
We had lunch along the Tevere with some of the professors and researchers from Roma Tre, the third university in Rome. From the left the people are Marina, the Queen, Valentina, Sandra and Anna.
