RANDOM UNO
Advertisements
We love the ads here in Rome. They are very different than those you find in the US. The photo below is of the Armani ad that is on the side of a building on XX Septembre. They change it twice per year and the King is always disappointed when the ad has a man. This year's ad is OK.
Diesel has a series of ads that have been fun to see. This is the one that is all over Rome at the moment.
Fountains
This is a photo of the Fountain of Books. It is located on a building that at one time was the seat of the University of Rome at Sapienza. For some reason there is a deer head hanging between the books.
This is the Fountain of Moses. It was in terrible condition until 2 years ago when they covered it up and began to restore it. This is the first time in 2 years that it has been visible. This fountain is one of the undertakings of Pope Sixtus V during his 5 years popedom (I made up that word.) This was during the 16th Century when the Popes were busy rebuilding the city and the aqueducts. He restored an old Roman aqueduct that terminated here and renamed it Aqua Felice - his real name before he became Pope was Felice Peretti. It means `happy water'.
The central figure is Moses and it is not nearly as striking as the one Michelangelo did of Moses for Pope Julius' tomb that is located in St. Peter in Chains. Most Romans did not like it and the designer is said to have committed suicide. The left panel is Aaron leading the Jews to a well and the right one is Gideon leading Jews to the Jordan River.
Orange Trees on XX Septembre
The main street near us has orange trees. In the spring the street smells from the orange blossoms. This fall some of the trees were dropping their oranges. This is the residue from one tree.
TV Satellite Stations
The TV in our apartment get about 1000 channels and about half of them seem to be from Arab countries. Of those at least half are Arab pornographic stations. The names of the stations are things like sexy-arab, arabsexclub, and arab-girls. This is one photo of one of the stations. I cannot show the others on this website since children may be looking.
Markets
Piazza Vittorio Market
One of our favorite markets is the one near the Termini train station at Piazza Vittorio. It is an indoor market consisting of half clothing, shoes and luggage with the other half food. It is one of the few markets outside of the one at Campo di Fiori that has the dried fruit that the Queen likes. The prices at the Campo market that is mainly for tourists is almost twice the price of this market which is mainly for locals.
The thing we like about this market is that they have fruits and vegetables that we have never seen anywhere else. These are the longest green beans we have ever seen.
We have no idea what these thorny cucumber like things are.
They sell Inca Cola here in this market. I have no idea if it tastes like the Inca Cola from Bolivia that we can get in the DC area.
Piazza Alessandria Market
In this market, close to where we live but outside the wall, we find more unusual vegetables and things. This is brocoletti - a form of broccoli.
..these are some form of bean..
..and these are porcini mushrooms - this is the season for them.
..and in this market we found a pet store that sold wine!!!
A 9 Euro Coat
It seems that only thing that the stores sell now are items from China and they are very cheap. These coats are only 9 Euros. How can they possible make them and ship them to Italy and sell them for 9 Euros?
