BIKING
On one of our first bike rides up the Tiber we encountered a film crew interviewing users of the path. They tried to interview us but our Italian was not quite good enough - like horrible!!!
They are building a brand new bridge over the Tiber and we cannot tell if it is just for bikers and walkers or for cars. It seems sort of narrow for cars and is located at a place where there is not a lot of infrastructure for cars to enter and exit the bridge.
There is a stretch of bike path that goes from where we enter north of the Ponte Risorgimento to south of the Ponte di Industria that is about 6 miles and used to be very bumpy. It was all basalt stone and in need of repair. Sometime between when we arrived in the spring and now they have paved the entire distance.
Along the path you pass the Cloaca Maxima, the first sewer line in Rome built in the 7th Century BCE to drain the forum. It dumps into the river and they are still finding marble heads from statutes in it.
Going south the new bike path ends abruptly and you can see they are working on extending it more to the south. You can carry your bikes up the stairs and there is an older section of bike path that we have used that goes on city streets for another 6 - 7 miles.
Anzio
During the last week in Rome while the weather was still warm we decided to take the bikes on the train to Anzio, a town on the coast about one hour away. In the past we have biked south from Anzio almost to Naples. This time we decided to bike north towards Ostia, the ancient port area of Rome. The particular train that we took to Anzio had a bike car but it was impossible to put our bikes into it so we opted to take the spot dedicated for a wheelchair and tuck our bikes there.
Anzio was a location for one of the summer homes of Nero during Roman times. The statue behind the Queen is of Nero or Nerone and the ruins near the water is what is left of his home.
… another view looking south with the city of Anzio in the background and the statue in the foreground.
The beach looking north from Anzio which is a popular beach area for Italians in the summer.
Just past Lido di Pini we stopped on the beach for a packed lunch.
The beach was not very clean.
The beach was very wide and the water seemed to be very clean. This is very close to the point where the Tyrrhenian Sea ends and theMediterranean Sea starts.
Bicycle Home
This year we met Jon from Dallas and his Italian girlfriend at the last hash run and they were talking about buying bikes. We told them that they were welcome to use our bikes while we were home in the US if they had space for them. This is a photo of the temporary new home for the bikes until we return in the spring. The good news was we did not have to carry the bikes up 96 steps - this room was on the ground floor.
