RANDOM DUE
Restaurant: Spirito di Vino
We went to a restaurant that was recommended to us by Judy Testa. (For information on Judy go to the PEOPLE section.) Beside the food this restaurant, located in the Trastevere section of Rome, had an interesting history. The wine cellar in the basement is located 30 feet below the street level and once was an outdoor public square in Roman times. The walls are made from of the oldest bricks in Rome and the building is one of the oldest continually used buildings.
In the 11th century the building was a synagogue and you can still see the Hebrew letters on the columns in the picture. During this period of time many Jews lived on this side of the Tiber River and there were several synagogues in this area.
The Maxxi
A new modern art museum opened in the spring in the northern part of Rome. Zaha Hadid, a very popular architect who has done a number of important buildings, designed it. The building itself was quite striking and it is located and integrated nicely into a residential neighborhood. Outside was the first exhibit that was a huge skeleton on the ground.
The inside of the building is all open space with lots of stairs and windows.
This is one of the exhibits and represents the holocaust experience of the artist.
If you look closely at this picture you can see two hands in the lower middle of the screen. This exhibit had an opera playing and mostly random computer generated images appearing all over the viewing area. The hands moved in time with the music. It wasn't until the music stopped that most people watching saw a young boy of 8 or 9 come out from behind the screen where he had been moving his hands in time to the music. Everyone applauded him and he went right back to the rear of the screen and continued to do it for the next playing. I am sure that most people, like me, who wandered up thought that the hand was part of the exhibit.
The Macro
This seems to be our modern art trip as we visited the Calebresi collection and the new Maxxi and then the Macro. This also had some unusual art pieces. One room had a number of pieces of art that were just on the floor. The head shown in the photo was just lying in the middle of the room.
There was also this cup on the floor. It looked like a cup of soda that someone had left it by mistake. I did pick it up and the inside was not liquid but solid - it was obviously a piece of art.
This room had art from the 80s.
This piece was hanging from the ceiling. It was one continuous wire.
Bus Routes
Some bus routes are just better than others.
Day of the Dead
Halloween has become a big deal in Italy with the kids. The day after Halloween, November 1st, is the Day of the Dead and this is the day that the dead come back to visit the living. It is a national holiday and everyone goes to the cemetery and eats `cookies of the dead' shown below.
Saint Agnese Crypts
This church is about a 35 - 40 minute walk from our apartment. It seems like each visit we walk there to see the church and the catacombs but for many reasons we have not been able to. One Sunday there was a service going on, one there were too many school kids and it was too crowded. This time as the sign says they are restoring them.
There are more than Krik Kroks
For a while it seemed like the only potato chip like snack was Krik Kroks. Now we have the choice of something different - Freeky Fries or Hello Kitty.
